Why is Your Major the Best?

By Niamh Coldren

Throughout the past week, I have asked students throughout DSA to discuss why they think their major is the best. Although there is a wide and wonderful variety of artistic expressions found here, we all have opinions and arguments on why ours is superior! Here are some of the responses I received from the student body:

“I get to do something that has formed the basis of my childhood, and I am allowed to pursue an art form that I love. Even during tough times, I end each day playing music. It lets me slow down, think, and process things.”
— Anonymous, 10th Grade, Band.

The art room smells nice, the teachers are amazing, and they let me draw cats.

The theater community is vulnerable and exciting. It is a place where I can make mistakes without being judged. Instead of my mistakes being viewed as negative, failure is something I am able to learn from, it contributes to the art of theater. My major is also really fun, and a wonderful outlet to express myself and my understanding of the world. It allows me to tell the audience something that I feel they need to know. Our acting becomes a part of a wider, pre-written story. It brings humanity to life.

Guitar is fun, fast paced, and engaging. I am given creative freedom and feel proud of the music I make.

I love Visual Arts because the teachers are chill and there’s a good structure present in the classes. It gives me the opportunity for personal growth and change through the experience of making artwork and reflecting on it. I have  learned many technical skills, but I also have freedom in what I choose to do and express. Each semester ends with a sense of accomplishment because I finish it with a final in which I can do whatever I want. The workload is just right (evenly weighted). Visual Arts prepares me for the future and gives flexibility in all possible careers because it applies to so many different paths of life. Finally,  it’s a comfortable class I look forward to each day, no matter what might be happening.
— Ryan, 9th Grade, Visual Arts

Stagecraft is the best because we get to engage with all majors and immerse ourselves in the entirety of the school (not just in our particular major) which leads to a sense of connection and kinship. This is furthered by the amount of time stagecraft majors spend together. We are very close and connected. Teamwork and problem solving are both valued. Stagecraft helps build skills that can be applied outside of school. It teaches us how to do things that might not be learned otherwise, but that are likely to be helpful. Finally, the DSA Stagecraft program is the only stagecraft program in the state!
— Ruby, 9th Grade, Stagecraft

The Creative Writing classroom is a safe, encouraging, and beautiful environment where we are able to explore and express ourselves. The teachers are fantastic at what they do. They encourage our voices and allow us to write our truths with integrity and honesty. Creative Writing has strengthened and uplifted my passion for writing, and it has given me a community to share it with.
